Yesterday representatives "CD Projekt Red» published the first teaser trailer for the game Cyberpunk 2077, and Mateus Kanik (Mateusz Kanik), head of a group of developers known for creating games in the "Witcher", was kind enough to give us an exclusive interview, in which he shed light on some of the features of the game world and mechanics.
– Have you played the original board game “Cyberpunk”?? What are your impressions of her??
– Well, I’ve never been much of a cyberpunk fan, but I don’t go to extremes. Especially now that I got married. (Laughs). You know – women love bad, risky guys until they grow up.
I first saw the Cyberpunk board game when I was seven years old while at summer camp. One of the older guys had a Code for this game and I was sucked into it headlong. I’ve only played Warhammer FRP before. When I got home, the first thing I did was go to the bookstore in our small town and pick up the latest version of the Cyberpunk 2020 Codex. But after some time, fantasy games became especially popular. But I still remember the delight of studying implants, fighting mobs in a completely different style than in Warhammer. Most often I played with my brother. And the fact that I now have the opportunity to work on Cyberpunk 2077 reminds me of my childhood.
– Your childhood acquaintance with “Cyberpunk” influenced the vision of the world of “Cyberpunk 2077”?
– It definitely influenced my understanding of this world, but when I played Cyberpunk, I was a small child and had no experience in RPG games. Sometimes I played really stupid roles and it’s unlikely that this experience can be used. 🙂
– And how much the world will change compared to the 2020 version? Will you use original materials in development??

The game system of a board game is simply impossible to translate in great detail into a computer game. We have created several test versions of the game mechanics and are testing them. Be that as it may, we are trying to bring the game as close as possible to the original, we even give players the opportunity to imprint the characteristics of their characters so that they can play with friends, change the balance of classes and, in part, the skill system.
The world has changed too. It’s been 57 years since the original story. The creator of the original game helps us in developing the universe Mike Pondsmith (Mike Pondsmith).
– And what has changed in the world during this period??
– The confrontation between four corporations in “Cyberpunk 2020” ended with the explosion of a nuclear bomb on the roof of Arasaka Tower, as a result of which the corporations lost their influence. The city has been recreated a little closer to the coast. You will be able to visit famous places such as Afterlife. Corporations still exist and you will definitely encounter them.
– The game engine will come from “Witcher” or another one will be used?
– This is an amazing engine! REDengine is one of the best tools for creating RPGs, allowing you to cover almost all aspects of role-playing games. But change is simply necessary. There were no guns in The Witcher, only crossbows, but that’s a completely different matter. We changed the physics and ballistics of the engine. The character’s movement has also undergone changes: the Witcher is a mutant, and we have added a system of cyber implants that allows you to modify your body. In addition to these changes, many small ones will be added.
– Which of the things presented in the teaser will be present in the game itself??
– I think the most important thing is the atmosphere, which will be exactly the same in the game. The teaser is very reminiscent of what we are working on. The game will definitely feature hand-to-hand combat, and there will be these cool hand implants. Cyber psychosis will also be presented. It occurs in people who have lost their humanity due to excessive replacement of body parts with implants. The weapons shown in the teaser will also be present in the game. And I hope the girl from the video will be in the game too.
– The description of the teaser briefly mentioned “braindance”. What is it?
– Flight of the mind is a kind of movie that is broadcast directly into the brain. You can feel the emotions and physical sensations of the person making the recording. There are two types of such “cinema”. An easy flight where you just watch the footage without feeling anything, something like a modern movie. And a deep flight in which all the sensations of the donor are transmitted to you. If the donor dies, then you die, because your brain processes are synchronized.
This is the huge video recording industry of 2077. We can say that "mind flight" is the future of Hollywood. There are corporations that make high-quality recordings, but there are also pirated ones that contain violence and murder.
And of course, this industry has its stars. After all, if you want to record a really good video, you must feel vivid emotions.
– How could you describe “Cyberpunk 2077” for someone who has not delved into this subculture?? For people who have never heard of this genre and have not watched Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell?
– “Cyberpunk 2077” will be a crazy game with a hero coming from the streets. Having risen from the bottom, he began to use high technology against corporations and everyone who lives at the expense of the common people. A lone cowboy mounts his steed and causes carnage (devil’s laughter). Awesomeness in its purest form, with a fascinating non-linear plot – just like in an epic film.
